PE

The vision for PE at Barming Pre-School and Primary School

Intent, Implementation & Impact Report for Physical Education (PE)

Intent

Barming Pre-School and Primary School recognises and values the importance of Physical Education (PE). We believe that PE, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children skills to keep them safe, such as being able to swim whilst also teaching children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Barming, not only through the sporting skills taught, but also through the values and disciplines PE promotes. We do this through fully adhering to the aims of the national curriculum for physical education to ensure that all children:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives.

It is our intention to build a curriculum that enables children to develop knowledge, skills and vocabulary in a broad range of sporting activities, as well as developing transferrable life skills such as tolerance, fairness and respect.

Through extra-curricular activities, we aim to raise the profile of PE and expose our children to sports they may never have had the opportunity to engage with. Our PE curriculum has been developed and supported by the Early Years Framework and the National Curriculum, with a clear progression from Reception to Year 6. This progression has been planned in order to build on the skills needed to meet the end of Key Stage objectives in the National Curriculum.

Implementation

At Barming Pre-School and Primary School, PE is taught through the use of our internal PE schemes, which are in-line with the National Curriculum and are used to aid teaching staff in their subject knowledge and planning of PE. The long-term plan sets out the PE units that are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. Lessons provide challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities, including; invasion games, net and wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor and adventure. Teachers are able to adjust and change lessons to suit the needs of their classes, but the scheme provides a strong basis of what is expected in each year group.

Each class receives two hours of high quality physical activity every week, covering two sporting disciplines every half-term. These are taught either by the class teacher, or by our Sports Coach who has received the necessary training and support. Each lesson, children are given the opportunity to practise skills in a variety of ways and each lesson builds upon the previous skills, allowing them time to embed it. Different skills are recapped throughout, and across, the years, allowing children to know and remember more.

What does PE look like in EYFS?

In Reception, PE is embedded within the children’s daily routine and curriculum, allowing them plenty of opportunities to explore the world around them. Our Reception children are given the opportunity to explore their outside area, with equipment such as bikes, wobble boards, balance boards, footballs, hula-hoops, stilts and tunnels readily available. In addition to this, we are fortunate enough to have a large climbing frame and trim trail in the outside area, giving children the opportunity to develop key skills, such as co-ordination, balance and core strength. Across the EYFS curriculum, there are opportunities to improve fine more skills with activities such as den making, peg clipping and stacking crates. Resources such as paintbrushes, scissors, pipe cleans and tweezers are always available within the classroom to further support fine motor skill development. Throughout the day, children are given plenty of movement breaks as they transition between the indoor and outdoor areas. Through the teaching of Read, Write Inc. for Phonics lessons, children are improving their posture and core strength by completing writing activities, with a focus on handwriting. From very early on in the year, the children are exposed to the routine of lunchtime, where they sit on benches in the school hall and eat their lunch. This again is another opportunity for the children to improve their core strength and posture.

Extra-Curricular Activities

At Barming Pre-School and Primary School, we offer a wide range of sporting after-school clubs run by both teaching staff and outside agencies, such as Danny Devine Football. Clubs run by outside agencies are paid for by parents and they provide children with access to a wide range of sporting activities. These activities are chosen by pupils through class votes and pupil voice to ensure they are successful and popular.

Children at Barming are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children. In addition, to support the growth of leadership, each year a small group of children from each class are invited to become Sports Ambassadors for the school. They develop into sporting role models for their peers, assisting with lunch-time activities, our annual Sports Day and any other Sporting activities.

Children in Year 5 attend swimming lessons in the spring term, with the aim that by the end of Year 5, all children are able to swim a minimum of 25m unassisted. In addition to this, we are looking to introduce a “Daily Mile”, to help meet the government target of all children being active for at least 60 minutes a day.

Impact

At Barming Pre-School and Primary School, we help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Barming; not only through the sporting skills taught, but also through the underpinning values and disciplines that PE promotes. Through strong links with PSHE, we promote the overall well-being and health of each child through teaching about self-discipline and that to be successful; children and adults need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness. Children are given the opportunity to reflect on their learning through end-of-unit self-assessments, where they can highlight their strengths and successes as well as recognising areas to develop. In all classes, children possess a wide range of physical abilities. Whilst recognising this fact, we provide suitable learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport which will hopefully develop our children into living happy and healthy lives, utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.

Clothing Required for Physical Education:

Please find below a detailed list explaining what your child will need for PE. On the days in which your child participates in PE lessons they will be allowed to come to school wearing their PE kit and can stay in this for the entire day. Therefore, please ensure you send them with appropriate clothing dependent on the weather.

ALL ITEMS MUST BE CLEARLY NAMED

  • A house coloured t – shirt (if you are unsure of which house then please message the class teacher to find out)
  • Navy Blue or Black Shorts – plain, no logos
  • Plain (no brands, logos, writing, emblems or glitter) black or navy blue tracksuit bottoms and jumper. If your child prefers they can wear a pair of navy blue or black leggings.
  • Trainers – these must be as plain as possible. They can be any colour but preferably no extreme colours such neon pink, green or yellow.

Long hair must be tied back at all times before your child can participate in P.E lessons; this is due to Health and Safety reasons.

Jewellery:

Jewellery is not to be worn in school unless for a religious purpose. In this case the school should have a letter from the parents on file. In those cases where a child's ears have been pierced, then small studs are worn and these should be removed for PE, games and swimming lessons. Children should not wear studs to school unless they are able to remove and replace them by themselves. If you wish to have your child's ears pierced, please note that it is best done at the start of the summer holiday, as the studs need to stay in the ear continuously for six weeks. In this way, the ears would be healed by September.
