PSHE
Intent:
Our intention at Barming Pre-School and Primary School is to provide our children with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that they need to effectively navigate the complexities of 21st Century life. Our curriculum will support our children to make informed choices around their health, safety, wellbeing, relationships and financial matters and will support them in becoming confident individuals and active members of society. Through our whole-school approach to PSHE, it is our belief that our children will have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible. Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is our commitment to enhancing and promoting our core values: Respect, Wisdom, Responsibility and Courage.
Our curriculum also incorporates an age appropriate understanding of RSE (Relationships and Sex Education), as set out in the statutory guidance, which will enable all our children to be safe and understand how to develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.
Implementation:
At Barming Pre-School and Primary School we follow the Kapow Scheme of learning which provides our children with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that they need to effectively navigate the complexities of the 21st Century. The lessons are taught on a weekly basis in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
The Kapow scheme of Learning for PSHE consists of five topic areas:
Each topic is revisited every year to allow the children to build on their prior learning. The lessons also provide a progressive programme, which supports the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study. Children across the school access a range of high quality teaching and learning activities to ensure that all children are able to access the learning and make progress.
All lesson plans include ideas for differentiation to stretch the most able learners and give additional support to those who need it. Many lessons include stories, scenarios, role-play situations and video clips which provide the opportunity for children to engage in real-life and current topics in a safe and structured way. Teachers are also encouraged to adapt activities accordingly for their classes.
PSHE in EYFS:
In Reception, PSHE is taught as an integral part of topic work and is embedded through the curriculum and daily routines. The objectives taught are from the Personal, Social and Emotional Development Statements from ‘Development Matters in EYFS’. Examples of how we support the personal, social and emotional development of our pupils in reception are:
Enrichment Opportunities:
As a school we also have visitors, such as the emergency services, who come into school to complement our PSHE curriculum and offer additional learning opportunities. This could be through the use of assemblies or year group specific workshops. PSHE and British Values are also an important part of school assemblies where children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenge and nurtured. As a school, we also want to empower out children to develop an understanding of Anti-Bullying, Cyber-Bulling and Online Safety and give them a safe space to discuss ideas related to these important topics.
Impact:
At Barming Pre-School and Primary School, we believe that a meaningful PSHE curriculum is the key to our children becoming confident, reflective and well-rounded members of society. By the time our pupils leave our school, they will be able to approach real-life situations and apply skills they have learnt to help them to navigate themselves through modern life. By teaching our pupils to stay safe and healthy, and by building their self-esteem, resilience and empathy, our PSHE programme will tackle barriers to learning, raise aspirations and improve the life chances of all our pupils. They will also be able to recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual Respect, Rule of Law and Liberty.
The Anti-Bullying Ambassadors
The aim of the Anti-Bullying Ambassadors is to raise awareness of the different forms of bullying and provide support for all pupils at Barming Pre-School and Primary School.
As part of their role, they will:
- Present assemblies during Anti-Bullying Week
- Work alongside staff to plan and prepare activities for whole school events e.g. Anti-Bullying Week
- To be available and break and lunchtimes to offer support to those that might need it
Meet the Anti-Bullying Ambassadors for 2024 to 2025:
Year 6 children: Hannah, Oliver, Freddie and Lorelei
Our ambassadors are made up of a team of Year 6 pupils who are dedicated to promoting respectful behaviours in our school.
The Wellbeing Ambassadors
We also have a team of Wellbeing Ambassadors who raise awareness of mental health and provide support for all pupils at Barming Pre-School and Primary School. The Wellbeing Ambassadors are currently working alongside Mrs Webber.
As part of their role, they are:
- promoting positive mental health
- raising awareness of mental health
- removing the stigma of mental health by encouraging others to talk
- signposting pupils to support they can access in school

NSPCC Number Day
National Society Prevention Cruelty Children
Today we learned about the charity NSPCC. We looked into what they do and how the help families.
We discussed how we use numbers in every day life for houses, phone numbers, times and cooking. We also thought about different jobs where you use numbers (there was a lot!) and finally we thought about games where we use numbers.
