The Romans

Topic

This term we are learning about the Romans. We will be learning about the expansion of the Roman empire and the impact that it had on Britain. We will also look at the Roman way of life including their homes, army, culture, technology and beliefs.

English

This term we are linking our learning to our Rome topic. We will be reading ‘Escape from Pompeii’, by Christina Balit and will be participating in reading, writing and drama activities based around the book.

Our focus this term will be setting descriptions, narratives and non-chronological reports.

Maths

In Maths we are starting the term by looking at Place Value. This will include:

Negative Numbers The children will be expected to know about negative numbers in the context of temperature. They will also be expected to use number lines to work out the differences between negative and positive numbers.

Counting in 6s, 7s, 9s, 25s, 50s, and 1000s Children will be expected to count on and back from any given number up to 10,000. They will also include counting in equal jumps.

Addition and Subtraction: Formal written method up to 4 digits. Estimating to check answers.

Comparing and classifying shapes: Including quadrilateral and triangles.

Time: Read, write and convert time between analogue and digital.

How you can help:

These areas could be reinforced by using different mathematical language that asks the children to use all four calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Also, referring to all the topics above in real life contexts that apply to the children.

Please practise times tables with your child. The link below is a very useful resource for practising times tables online:-

How you can support your child’s learning at home:

Listen to them read, ideally 10 minutes at least 3 times a week

Read and spell the Year 3/4 keywords

Read and write numbers to 10,000

Practise times tables

Count on and back from any given number to 1000

Point out the maths in everyday life. Include your child in activities involving numbers and measuring, such as shopping, cooking and travelling

Important things to remember:

Indoor and Outdoor PE: Wednesday  (both classes)

Please could you ensure that your child comes into school in their P.E kit on Wednesdays.

PE kit should comprise of shorts, T shirt, tracksuit and trainers.

Please ensure long hair is always tied back.

If your child has their ears pierced, they need to be able to remove these by themselves or leave them out on PE days.

If your child has anything linked to our topic that they would like to bring in and share with the class please send it in but do ensure it is named.

Thank you
