Welcome back to Term 3!
This term, we will basing our writing around Holes by Louis Sachar. A fantastic read! We will be covering a number of genres in our writing including leaflets, letters, non-chronological reports, diary entries and narratives. We will continue to develop our understanding of basic sentences and associated punctuation and will begin to add further detail to our sentences by adding phrases or using conjunctions to extend our sentences.
In reading, we are excited to be trialling a new approach for shared reading lessons in which we will be focusing on vocabulary, developing our fluency and associated comprehension. We will be sharing and discussing texts of newspaper articles for non-fiction, poetry, a classic text (War of the worlds) and a modern novel (The infinite lives of Maisie Day by Christopher Edge) which all link to our Term 4 Science topic of Space.
In maths this term, we will be converting our knowledge of number and place value to start reading and writing roman numerals. We will explore negative numbers. When calculating, we will use the formal methods for addition, subtraction and division (rapid recall in times tables will be vital for division!). Through our revision of addition and subtraction, we will also recap on rounding as a useful tool to check accuracy in our answers.
Science
Earth, sun and moon
We are looking forward to finding out about the solar system and the planets within it. We will learn how planets move across the sky and will explore how day and night occur with the apparent movement of the sun across the sky. We will learn key vocabulary in the form of geocentric and heliocentric views of the solar system.
History
What did the Greeks do for us?
Through investigating the city states of Athens and Sparta, we will identify the similarities and differences between them. Using different sources of evidence, we will learn about democracy and compare this to the ways in which other civilisations are governed. Considering the legacy of the Ancient Greeks, we will learn about the Olympic games, architecture, art and theatre.
Fitness and Basketball
PE lessons for both classes will be held on Tuesdays. We will have both an outdoor and indoor PE lesson on Tuesdays. Please make sure as we move later into the term that the children have appropriate PE kit for the weather eg. a hoodie/tracksuit bottoms. A reminder that PE kits should contain a plain house colour t-shirt (no brands) and a dark, plain hoodie/tracksuit for outdoor PE.
