RE
Intent, Implementation and Impact
Intent:
At Barming Pre-School and Primary School, RE has an important role in the development of our pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. It is aimed to promote respect and open-mindedness towards others with different faiths and beliefs and engage pupils in systematic enquiry into significant human questions which religion and worldviews address, so that they can develop the understanding and skills needed to appreciate and appraise varied responses to these questions, as well as develop responses of their own. Children learn about Christianity and other principle faiths throughout Britain, through questioning and enquiry, enabling them to develop both an understanding and appreciation of the way that religious beliefs shape life and behaviour, as well as of different religious cultures and customs. We enable pupils to have the confidence to voice their own views and respect the views of others.
Throughout the school, RE is taught through themes which are embedded within each religion, showing how different religions are interlinked as well comparing and contrasting different views and practices. Children’s critical thinking skills are developed and their motivation to learn increased, enhancing their knowledge and understanding of the subject. This approach allows children to make their own choices and decisions concerning religion and belief. RE at Barming Pre-School and Primary School is taught to inform and develop the skills with which evaluation can take place.
Implementation:
Barming Pre-School and Primary School follows the Kent Agreed Syllabus through the RE Today scheme. The model used is based on enquiry, with a 3-strand approach as the basis for implementation. Every unit is based around a key question. There is a focus on critical thinking skills, on personal reflection into the child’s own thoughts and feelings and how this connects with their own lives, on growing subject knowledge and nurturing spiritual development.
Believing – to know about and understand a range of religious and non-religious worldviews.
Living - to gain and deploy the skills needed to engage seriously with religious and non-religious worldviews.
Expressing – to express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religious and non-religious worldviews
The children start from their own experience to ensure understanding of the concept being studied then move into investigating that concept in depth from the point of view of different religions.
All year groups study Christianity alongside other religions. Each year group will learn about two or three further religions. These include Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Humanism.
In EYFS, children are taught about traditions, beliefs and world views outside of their own experiences through exploring other cultures and practices in the wider world.
Impact:
Through their R.E. learning, the children are able to make links between their own lives and those of others in their community and in the wider world. They develop an understanding of other people’s cultures and ways of life, extending their knowledge and understanding of religions and beliefs.
They begin to develop a religious vocabulary and interpret religious symbolism in a variety of forms and reflect on questions of meaning, providing their own thoughtful and informed insights. They explore questions of beliefs and values in relation to different issues and the different worldviews of others. They enjoy learning about other religions and why people choose, or choose not to follow a religion.
Through the use of pupil voice and evidence in books, children are able to express themselves and show and discuss their learning with increasing confidence. From this evidence and summative assessment, we are able to further develop and improve the RE curriculum.
RE Learning across the school
Keep in touch with Rev Wil North:
Greetings from St Margaret's!
If we haven't had the chance to meet I'd like to introduce myself! I'm Wil North, Rector of St Margaret's Church (off South Street in Church Lane).
It is my privilege to try to serve the parish in lots of ways. One of my roles is being a Governor at the school. I have the opportunity to take assemblies throughout the year, host services at St Margaret's and help to run 'Kings Squad' - a Christian club for those in Years 3 to 6 which meets on Monday lunchtimes (12.30 pm to 1.10 pm).
I wanted to also let you know of a few other activities which you and/or your children may be interested in.
All Age Worship - 10 am at St Margaret's every first Sunday of the month. An engaging service designed to be accessible to all.
Sunday Club - every Sunday (except the first) in Church cross house (church Lane, off south street) 9.50 am-11.15 am for children age 4 to 11. The session includes games, craft and a Bible story.
Messy Church - every 2nd and 4th Sunday in term time at the Village Hall on Heath Rd, 4 pm-5.15 pm. A fun, informal way for the family to learn more about the Christian faith through stories, song, activities and food!
If you're interested in any of the above do just turn up or get in touch for more details!
