Term 2

Term 1

Our Land, Our Country!

Topic: UK Holiday Destinations

Where have you travelled to during the summer holiday? Did you drive to the seaside? Or take a bus to Maidstone? Perhaps you went camping in the countryside, or went on a train to London? During this topic we will thinking about the places in the UK that we have been and other locations that we haven't been to yet.  We will be looking at a range of locations around the United Kingdom and making simple comparisons. For example how does Maidstone compare to a seaside location? We will be learning about the four countries that make up Great Britain. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, locating them on a map and naming the capital cities of each country.

In our English learning we will be focusing on writing sentences using correct punctuation and cursive script. Children will continue to practice applying their phase 3 phonic skills independently in their writing. We will start the year by reading the story 'The Naughty Bus' and completing work around this text. See below for a video of the story!

To start the year, the whole school explored the book 'The Barnabus Project', written by the Fan Brothers. Year 1 really enjoyed looking at all of the different experimental animals that were in the book, so decided to have a go at creating their own! What do you think?

We will be starting Phase 3/4 (scroll down for details on the Year 1 home page), whilst recapping Phase 3 tricky words and sounds.

We start the year off by learning all about our bodies. We work on learning key body part names and knowing the functions of these body parts. We also focus on the five senses and why these are important for keeping us safe in every day life.
