KS1 Reading

Within EYFS and KS1, reading is at the core of everything we teach. Our aim is for every child to love books and leave KS1 being a fluent, confident reader.

We do this by supporting your child with daily phonics lessons, daily guided reading lessons, story times, inviting book corners, reading interventions, stage appropriate books to take home, books for enjoyment to take home, EYFS and key stage 1 library as well as many other opportunities.

Read Write Inc

We teach phonics and reading through Read Write Inc. which is a scheme created by Ruth Miskin.

Children learn sounds in three sets.

Children read books at their phonics stage and these are fully decodable. Children build fluency and confidence by reading books more than once. Books that children read at school are closely linked to those read at home so that children recognise familiar words.

Reading Incentive

To encourage children to read at home, we will be rewarding them for their effort.

When children reach;

25 reads; they will receive a certificate and sticker in KS1 assembly,

75 reads; they will receive a certificate and bookmark in KS1 assembly,

150 reads; they will receive a certificate and book to keep in KS1 assembly,

200+ reads; they will receive a certificate and a treat afternoon of extra play and an ice lolly in Term 6.
