The vision for PE at Barming Pre-School and Primary School
Intent, Implementation & Impact Report for Physical Education (PE)
Intent
At Barming Pre-School and Primary School, we recognise and value the importance of Physical Education (PE) in promoting children’s physical, emotional, and social development. PE, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensuring children achieve optimal physical health and emotional wellbeing.
Our intent is to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to participate, enjoy, and succeed in physical education. Through our curriculum, we aim to equip children with essential life skills, such as resilience, teamwork, fairness, and respect. We also teach pupils how to keep themselves safe, including the development of swimming proficiency, and how to cooperate and collaborate as part of an effective team.
Our curriculum is designed to:
We ensure that children develop knowledge, skills, understanding, and vocabulary across a wide range of sporting activities, with clear progression from Reception to Year 6. We also place a strong emphasis on developing transferable life skills that extend beyond the PE curriculum, helping pupils grow into confident, healthy, and active individuals.
Through extra-curricular clubs, enrichment opportunities, and competitive events, we strive to raise the profile of PE and expose children to sports and experiences they may not otherwise encounter.
Implementation
At Barming Pre-School and Primary School, PE is taught using internally developed PE schemes designed by our Sports Coach and refined in line with the National Curriculum. These schemes provide teachers with high-quality support, clear progression pathways, and strong subject knowledge.
Our long-term PE plan outlines the units taught across each year group, ensuring full coverage of the National Curriculum, including:
Each class receives two hours of high-quality PE per week, consisting of one indoor and one outdoor session. Lessons are delivered by the class teacher or our Sports Coach, providing a balance of specialist instruction and consistent relationships with pupils.
Lessons build on prior knowledge and provide pupils with opportunities to practise, refine, and apply skills in varied contexts. Key learning is revisited across year groups to ensure children know more, remember more, and can do more over time.
We ensure that all children can access high-quality PE through:
In EYFS, physical development is embedded across continuous provision, outdoor learning, and daily routines. Children engage in rich opportunities to explore movement, develop coordination, and build strength through activities such as:
Early routines also support physical readiness, such as sitting at lunchtime benches and structured handwriting activities through Read Write Inc. These experiences develop the fundamental movement skills and physical confidence needed for a successful transition into Key Stage 1 PE.
Our PE curriculum from Years 1 to 6 is carefully structured to ensure clear, progressive development of skills year on year.
Adaptations are routinely made to ensure lessons remain inclusive, accessible, and challenging for all pupils.
Assessment in PE includes:
Assessment information informs planning and ensures learning is appropriately challenging and inclusive for all pupils.
Extra-Curricular Activities
We offer a wide range of after-school sporting clubs delivered by both school staff and external providers, such as Impact! and Danny Devine Football. Activities are selected with input from pupil voice to ensure high levels of interest, engagement, and participation across the school.
In addition to clubs, we run numerous school sports teams that represent Barming in local leagues, festivals, and cup competitions. These include:
These teams provide opportunities for children to develop competitive experience, teamwork, resilience, and sporting values while proudly representing the school.
Children are also regularly invited to take part in a variety of inclusive competitive events within the local area. These experiences support:
To further promote leadership, selected pupils in Years 5 and 6 become Sports Ambassadors, acting as role models and supporting lunchtime activities, Sports Day and school competitions.
Impact
Through high-quality PE provision, children at Barming Pre-School and Primary School:
We aim for all children to leave Barming with a positive attitude towards physical activity and the motivation to lead healthy, active lives.
Clothing Required for Physical Education:
Please find below a detailed list explaining what your child will need for PE. On the days in which your child participates in PE lessons they will be allowed to come to school wearing their PE kit and can stay in this for the entire day. Therefore, please ensure you send them with appropriate clothing dependent on the weather.
ALL ITEMS MUST BE CLEARLY NAMED
Long hair must be tied back at all times before your child can participate in P.E lessons; this is due to Health and Safety reasons.
Jewellery:
Jewellery is not to be worn in school unless for a religious purpose. In this case the school should have a letter from the parents on file. In those cases where a child's ears have been pierced, then small studs are worn and these should be removed for PE, games and swimming lessons. Children should not wear studs to school unless they are able to remove and replace them by themselves. If you wish to have your child's ears pierced, please note that it is best done at the start of the summer holiday, as the studs need to stay in the ear continuously for six weeks. In this way, the ears would be healed by September.
