The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception. The children will have a more formal learning environment in Year 1 and will continue to learn through play, alongside being involved in exciting topics so that they remain motivated, eager and enthused learners. In Year 1, we expect children to read for around 10-15 minutes at home each night. The children are expected to become more independent readers and writers, as the year advances.
If you have any questions or queries about your child’s progress, please don’t hesitate to come and see us after school.

These are the Phonics sounds your children will learn in Year 1.
During Year 1 children will be expected to spell a number of words correctly in their writing by the end of the year. We will focus on a number on words each term to support them. Please find the Year 1 common exception words below.

During June, when your child is Year 1, they will sit the Phonics Screening Check. The children will read 40 words, 20 real words and 20 pseudo words. This checks their phonetic ability. The pass mark, set by the government is usually 31 or 32 out of 40. This can change yearly and is released after the children have taken it.
