Barming Pre-School and Primary School

PE

Our Vision for Physical Education

At Barming Pre-School and Primary School, our vision is for every child to develop the confidence, competence and motivation to enjoy physical activity and lead a healthy, active life. Through a broad and progressive PE curriculum, pupils develop physical literacy, positive attitudes towards movement, and important personal qualities such as teamwork, resilience, communication and respect.

Intent

At Barming Pre-School and Primary School, our intent is to provide a broad, balanced and progressive Physical Education curriculum that develops physically confident pupils who have the knowledge, skills and motivation to lead healthy, active lives.

Our curriculum is designed to develop physical literacy from EYFS to Year 6. Pupils progressively build fundamental movement skills, including running, jumping, throwing, catching, balancing and coordination, before applying these skills in increasingly complex activities and sporting contexts.

Through PE, pupils also develop tactical understanding, teamwork, communication, resilience, leadership and respect. They are encouraged to challenge themselves, reflect on their performance and recognise how skills and principles can transfer between different sports and physical activities.

We aim for all pupils to leave primary school with the confidence to participate in a range of physical activities, an understanding of the importance of health and fitness, and a positive attitude towards remaining active throughout their lives.

Implementation

At Barming Pre-School and Primary School, PE is taught through a structured and progressive curriculum using Complete PE as our core scheme, supplemented by additional curriculum opportunities such as Drumba. The Complete PE learning ladders provide clear progression from EYFS to Year 6, enabling pupils to revisit key skills and apply them in increasingly challenging contexts.

Pupils receive two PE lessons each week, typically experiencing a mixture of indoor and outdoor units across the year. They take part in a broad range of activity areas, including:

  • Games
  • Gymnastics
  • Dance
  • Athletics
  • Outdoor Adventurous Activities
  • Striking and Fielding
  • Net and Wall Activities
  • Health-related Fitness
  • Swimming in Year 5

These areas are carefully sequenced so that pupils can build on prior learning and develop their physical competence, confidence and understanding over time.

Lessons are designed to develop both physical skills and understanding. Teachers use modelling, questioning, feedback and opportunities for practice, application and reflection so that pupils can improve their technique, make decisions and develop tactical awareness.

PE is inclusive and accessible for all pupils. Activities are adapted where needed through changes to space, task, equipment and support, helping pupils to participate successfully, experience appropriate challenges and make progress from their individual starting points.

Assessment is ongoing and based on teacher observation, with pupils’ progress considered across physical skills, tactical understanding, teamwork, application of rules and evaluation of performance. This information is used to inform future teaching and ensure pupils continue to be appropriately supported and challenged.

Impact

The impact of our PE curriculum is that pupils develop the knowledge, skills, confidence and positive attitudes needed to take part successfully in physical activity and lead healthy, active lives.

As pupils move through the school, they make progress in fundamental movement skills, physical fitness and tactical understanding. They become increasingly able to apply previously learned skills in new activities, make decisions, solve problems and adapt their performance in different contexts.

Pupils also develop important personal qualities through PE, including resilience, cooperation, respect, responsibility and leadership. They learn to work effectively with others, communicate clearly, reflect on their own performance and identify how they can improve.

By the end of Year 6, we aim for pupils to leave Barming with the confidence to participate in a range of physical activities, the ability to transfer skills across different sports, an understanding of the importance of health and fitness, and a positive attitude towards remaining active in secondary school and beyond.

Clothing Required for Physical Education

On PE days, pupils may come to school wearing their PE kit and remain in it for the whole day. Please ensure clothing is suitable for the weather and that all items are clearly named.

PE kit should include:

  • A house-coloured T-shirt
  • Plain navy blue or black shorts
  • Plain navy blue or black tracksuit bottoms, leggings and/or jumper for colder weather
  • Suitable trainers for physical activity

Long hair must be tied back before taking part in PE.

For safety, jewellery should not be worn during PE lessons. Small stud earrings must be removed before PE, games and swimming, and pupils should be able to remove and replace these independently. Any jewellery worn for religious reasons should be discussed with the school in line with our usual procedures.

Beyond the Curriculum

At Barming Pre-School and Primary School, we believe PE extends beyond curriculum lessons. Pupils are given a range of opportunities to take part in physical activity, represent the school, compete with others and develop confidence, teamwork and resilience in different settings.

Our wider PE offer includes after-school clubs, intra-school and inter-school competitions, sports days, active play opportunities and themed sporting events. These experiences allow pupils to apply the skills they develop in lessons in both cooperative and competitive contexts.

In 2026/27, our school teams include:

  • Mixed KS2 Netball Team
  • UKS2 Boys’ Football Team
  • UKS2 Girls’ Football Team

These teams take part in fixtures, leagues, festivals and competitions across the year, giving pupils opportunities to represent Barming and experience competitive school sport.

A fantastic effort from our boys at the NLT football tournament in September!

The boys won all of their group games, scoring an impressive 21 goals and conceding just 1 along the way. They then progressed to the quarter-finals, where they faced Snodland in a closely fought match.

Unfortunately, the boys were knocked out after a 3–2 defeat, but they can hold their heads high after an excellent performance.

Drumba

Introduced in 2025/26, Drumba is an exciting addition to our PE curriculum. It combines energetic movement with rhythm and coordination to help pupils develop cardiovascular fitness, stamina, coordination and confidence in an engaging way.

All pupils have now completed their first Drumba unit, and it will continue to form part of our health-related fitness provision as children progress through the school.

School Games Mark

We are proud to have achieved the School Games Gold Mark for three consecutive years: 2023/24, 2024/25 and 2025/26.

This recognition reflects our continued commitment to providing pupils with high-quality opportunities to be active, take part in school sport and experience competition.

House Captains

Our House Captains play an important role in representing their houses and supporting the wider life of the school.

This year’s school house captains are:

  • Bermelie: Flynn
  • Oaken Wood: Fraser
  • Kettle Bridge: George
  • St Margaret: Meeval

This year’s school vice captains are:

  • Bermelie: Evelynne
  • Oaken Wood: Reggie
  • Kettle Bridge: Ellis
  • St Margaret: Molly

Each year, pupils are selected to take on the responsibility of House Captain, helping to promote teamwork, participation and a sense of belonging across the school.

Celebrating Sporting Achievements

At the end of each academic year, we celebrate sporting achievement across the school through a number of long-standing awards. These recognise both house success during Sports Day and individual contribution to school sport.

Our sporting awards are now proudly displayed together in a trophy cabinet in the main school hall. These include:

  • Overall Sports Day Winning House Shield
  • Infant Sports Day Winning House Trophy
  • Junior Sports Day Winning House Trophy
  • Boys’ Contribution to Sports Shield

The shields are engraved each year with the winning house or pupil names, while the Sports Day trophies display coloured ribbons representing the current winning houses.
