Barming Primary School is a 2 form entry primary school on the outskirts of Maidstone. It is a co-educational school for children aged 2 to 11 years old. There are currently 416 children on roll.

Vikings and Anglo Saxons

2021 to 2022

In Term 3 we will be reading A Midsummer Night's Dream, A Shakespeare Story by Andrew Matthews and Tony Ross. We will be concentrating on developing characters through action, description and dialogue, building atmosphere to create atmosphere, vocabulary and grammar, punctuation and spelling.

                                      

                                                       

 

During our Guided Reading sessions, the two classes will be reading different books.  Empire will be reading Street Child by Berlie Doherty and Ruben will be reading Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson.

The children will be focusing on understanding words in context, reading and retrieving information, skimming and scanning, summarising as well as using 'deeper thinking' questions.

    

 

                                                                                  

In Maths, we will be focusing on multiplication and division, 2D and 3D shape, fractions, measures including area and volume, and statistics and measures. We expect that all children will challenge themselves in lessons by attempting reasoning and problem solving questions; this will enable them to develop their understanding of Mathematical concepts being covered.

 

Please help your child gain confidence with all of their timetables.  They can use Times table Rockstars for practice.

                                                                                  

In Science this Term we will be looking at living things and their habitats, focusing on different lifecycles, describing the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction in some plants and animals, and researching the life of Sir David Attenborough.

                                                                                        

 

Our topic in RE will be Christianity and the Easter story.

 

                                                                         

We will be focusing this Term on The Vikings in Art, producing our own pictures of Vikings alongside looking at the rune alphabet.

 

                                                          

In PSHE/SMSC this term we will be reflecting on the Nelson Mandela and considering different point of view.

                                                   

Days that the children have PE:

 

RUBEN CLASS: We will be having PE on Wednesday (Outdoor) and Thursday (Indoor), please come to school dressed in your PE kit which should be weather appropriate. We will be going to swimming lessons on Tuesday, please bring in your swimming kits (Please note, swimming lessons will start on Tuesday 1st March)

 

EMPIRE CLASS: We will be having PE on Wednesday (Outdoor) and Thursday (Indoor), please come to school dressed in your PE kit which should be weather appropriate

 

How you can support your child's learning:

Feel free to use the many helpful websites for practising Maths and literacy skills - some relevant links for Year 5 learning are at the bottom of our Class Page.  All you need to do is click the subject area you want to work on to open up the options.

 

If they would like to do some extra work, it is preferable that you hear your child read a few times each week, as well as reading to them, to model expression.  We would like to see the children logging how often they read in their contact books, feel free to add any notes to their books for us to see.

 

Other information:

If you have any short queries, please write them in your child's contact book and ensure they know they need to let us see the note.  Please sign their contact books at the end of each week, so we are aware that you have seen them, these will be collected and checked twice a week.
