Term 4
2021/2022
Topic Title - Explorers: Columbus/ Pirates
English
We will start the term by looking at instructional writing; children will be making their own pirate hat and using imperative verbs to describe how they made it. We will be taking a closer look at pirates, describing their characters and learning some key pirate vocabulary to support our writing throughout the term. We will be reading the book “The Pirates Next Door’ by Jonny Duddle. Children will retell parts of the story, describing the characters and thinking about what could happen next. Children will continue to develop a greater stamina for writing at length, ensuring they use a range of punctuation correctly in their work.
Children will develop a deeper understanding of suffixes and how they change a root word − eg “ful” “less” as in help – helpless. We will begin to use apostrophes to mark singular possession in nouns (for example, the girl’s name) and apostrophes of omission (he didn’t, he couldn’t).
Spelling Shed – We will continue to encourage children to use ‘Spelling Shed’ to support their spelling throughout the term.
