Term 2 Mayans

Term 2

Mayans

2021 to 2022

In Term 2 we will be reading The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes alongside The Smelly Sprout by Allan Plenderleith.  We will be focusing on the features of a poem, character setting and descriptions, whilst also continuing to build our grammar, punctuation and spelling skills.

During our Guided Reading sessions, the two classes will be reading different books.  Ruben will be reading The Legend of Podkin One-Ear by Kieran Larwood and Empire will be reading The Firework-Maker's Daughter by Philip Pullman.

The children will be focusing on understanding words in context, reading and retrieving information, skimming and scanning, summarising as well as using 'deeper thinking' questions.

In Maths, we will be focusing on addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, factors and multiples, ordering, comparing and equivalence fractions, statistics and measure including time.

We expect that all children will challenge themselves in lessons by attempting reasoning and problem solving questions; this will enable them to develop their understanding of Mathematical concepts being covered.

Please help your child gain confidence with all of their timetables.  They can use Times table Rockstars for practice.

In Science this Term we will be looking at properties and changes of material. Grouping according to properties, dissolving and recovery from solution, reversible and irreversible, investigating the effects of burning materials.

Our topic in RE will be Christianity and understanding the difference in perception.

We will be focusing this Term on The Maya in Topic and Art/D.T.  Discussing the letter and number system of the Maya and designing and creating a Maya pot.

In PSHE/SMSC this term we will be reflecting on exploring and understanding our sense of identity.

How you can support your child's learning:

Feel free to use the many helpful websites for practising Maths and literacy skills - some relevant links for Year 5 learning are at the bottom of our Class Page.  All you need to do is click the subject area you want to work on to open up the options.

If they would like to do some extra work, it is preferable that you hear your child read a few times each week, as well as reading to them, to model expression.  We would like to see the children logging how often they read in their contact books, feel free to add any notes to their books for us to see.

Days that the children have PE:

We will be having PE on Wednesday and Friday, please come to school dressed in your PE kit which should be weather appropriate.

Other information:

If you have any short queries, please write them in your child's contact book and ensure they know they need to let us see the note.  Please sign their contact books at the end of each week, so we are aware that you have seen them, these will be collected and checked twice a week.

Thank you in advance from the whole of the Year 5 Team for your on-going support.
